Deadly Dates without the Ice Skates

Galway, for us lucky inhabitants, is a glorious place to live. The culture capital of 2020 and all that. Yet it’s easy to feel like a mouldy Easy Singles cheese these days, unattached and smelling a bit... of desperation. But remember that beautiful city and that God-like face staring back at you in the mirror, well now that's the golden ticket to romance. So I'm going to ask you to do yourself a solid and ask out that sparkly-eyed human or go on that Tinder date that you’re a lil interested in.

So I’m going to ask you to do yourself a solid and ask out that sparkly-eyed human or go on that Tinder date that you’re a lil interested in.

Now let's talk exciting good-time, activity talk, The Date. Although pubs are closed, restaurant shutters are down, and you won't finish the night annihilating ‘Dancing Queen’ in Sisco, there is still mighty craic to be had!

Ice-skating very sadly appears off the Christmas menu, unless of course, you are the ice-princess of Galway, in which case strap on those skates and soar around your own frozen lake. But for the rest of us simple folk, we need skating alternatives and pronto. Alternative options for you to soar through the festive season of romance is on your rollerblades, skates, or a board!

It doesn’t matter if it’s your old dusty blades or your little brother’s Penney board. If gliding, maybe a little foot shuffling and hand-holding takes your fancy, then take that person you fancy skating for that awkward yet adorable, falling, catching each other, and holding eye contact for just too long kind of moment. This is the exciting part you choose your winter wonderland location. Every path, every alley, even shop street (newly paved) is your ice rink. Be the main character in your coming-of-age movie this Christmas.

It can’t hurt to stop by Little Collins for a CBD coffee to chill the nerves.

Now for all you equally cheesy, feet over wheels (soon to be head over heels) humans, I see you. The walks of Galway are spectacular as you may already know. Though there are some extra ethereal times to go to some especially special places. Walk to Woodquay is a beautiful walk you can do starting at Spanish Arch, going by the canals, ending at the NUIG rowing club. Past the bridge, there are benches overlooking the whole of Lower Corrib and the cathedral, and is particularly pretty at sunset. Another beautiful sunset walk is just about anywhere on the Salthill Prom. Some hotspots to end the walk include Ladies Beach at the Jungle Beach Café or atop the changing shelter at Blackrock. Depending on the vibe and the weather, the walk could double as a swim date, maybe a spicy jump off Blackrock? Or maybe leave the Atlantic dive for date two, all going swimmingly.

If you're feeling a little nervous about the romantic walk, skate or swim, just remember they’re probably just as nervous as you and ye had enough of that good vibe chemistry to want to see each other. So, try and enjoy your day, you’re braver and more beautiful than you believe.

P.S: It can't hurt to stop by Little Collins for a CBD coffee to chill the nerves.
