Style Aesthetic Of The Week - Light/Dark Academia

Words by Áine McGee. Photos by the Ethereal Magazine Team.

The Vibe – For this aesthetic, it’s all about academics. When you think of this aesthetic think of Trinity Library museum with a coffee in hand, a heavy book, hidden in dark corners hearing rain against the window. The whole style is based on comfort and warmth. Some film inspiration to get you into this aesthetic is Dead Poets Society, Kill Your Darlings and Harry Potter.

Wardrobe Essentials - Polo necks, skirts, plaid trousers, doc martin shoes, cardigans, blazers, oversized shirts, wire rim glasses.

Colours – Neutral colours, browns, beiges, blacks.

This outfit really takes inspiration from Sherlock Holmes well known for wearing tweed blazers. The blazer is actually a hand me down from my granny and the sweater was a lucky find at my local charity shop . To be honest the shirt is from my old school uniform but you can never go wrong with it . The trousers were meant for the debs I never had . The jewellery I’m wearing is all from my grandfather. Overall I love this fit and feel like I’m about to go on a case with Dr.Watson back in the Edwardian era.

I’ve always believed that the colour brown is a staple in any wardrobe. My leather coat is a hand-me-down from my Nana. The quality is needless to say amazing & it’s the perfect addition for most of my outfits! Outerwear often suffers the most from wear & tear so for me it’s important that it’s durable especially living in Galway. My jumpsuit is seventies vintage & it’s honestly so easy to dress up or down! I had been on the hunt for a staple jumpsuit for awhile so I couldn’t help myself when I found this beauty. My bag is an old briefcase I found at home from my parent’s younger years & it really adds the academia vibe for this look.

I found these fab grandad trousers in a charity shop in Sligo about 4 years ago, the navy turtle neck actually belonged to the mum I worked for as an au pair in France and the belt is a hand me down from my cousin

Everything pictured is old stock mostly Zara, Stradivarius and other similar brands (check depop you might get lucky!!). Neutral clothes are my fav, You’ll never fail to feel classy in a bit of plaid or a chunky knit. Docs are a complete staple when it comes to these looks, they go with everything and add a bit of edge to otherwise very feminine styles

The outfit is all sourced from charity shops just goes to show you don’t have to shop in fancy boutiques to look sophisticated
